Installing the FFXI Client and Connecting to Tonberry

Note: If you already have FFXI installed for retail, you only need to do steps 1, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. If you already have FFXI installed for another private server, you only need to do steps 6, 8, 9 and 10.

Remember to run everything as admin:

1. Visual C++ Runtimes and .NET Framework
These are prerequisites for the client's custom bootloader that connects to private servers. Install in exactly this order:
Visual C++ 2013 Runtime
Visual C++ 2017 Runtime
.NET Framework

2. The FFXI Client
Nominally: the client. Download all five parts of the installer and be sure to follow the install instructions on this page.

3. PlayOnline
Once you have finished installing FFXI and all of its expansions, run the PlayOnline Viewer (if a desktop shortcut was not automatically made, use C:\Program Files (x86)\PlayOnline\SquareEnix\FINAL FANTASY XI\polboot.exe) and allow PlayOnline to update then reopen it. You will be asked if you are a member. Choose "Current Member" and enter the following:
Member Name: foo [or anything you want]
PlayOnline ID: QWER1234 [or any 4 letters + 4 numbers]
PlayOnline Password: [leave blank]
SquareEnix ID: [leave blank]
Once that is complete, you will be brought to the home menu of PlayOnline. Close the program.

4. Applying the "Check Files" Patch
Upon the initial installation of Final Fantasy XI, PlayOnline will not immediately recognize the game as installed. Download this ZIP archive which will allow the use of the Check Files function to update the game in the next step. Simply extract the contents of the ZIP archive into the folder C:\Program Files (x86)\PlayOnline\SquareEnix\FINAL FANTASY XI\ and re-open PlayOnline.

5. Updating the FFXI Client
Next we need to update. Navigate to your PlayOnline installation folder and go to this directory: C:\Program Files (x86)\PlayOnline\SquareEnix\FINAL FANTASY XI\ROM\0\ then delete the first file on the list "0.DAT". Reopen PlayOnline and go to "Check Files" on the left hand menu. IMPORTANT: select "Final Fantasy XI" from the dropdown list, then continue. The entire process should look exactly like this album of screenshots. PlayOnline will, after a few moments, say that files need to be repaired. Accept the prompt and let PlayOnline update your game. This may be a several hour process. Once complete, close PlayOnline.

6. Applying the Tonberry Patch
At this point, the game will run for most FFXI private servers. Tonberry has some custom content which will require a small patch to show said content properly. Download this ZIP archive and extract the contents into C:\Program Files (x86)\PlayOnline\SquareEnix\FINAL FANTASY XI.

7. Ashita
Once you have your FFXI client installed and updated, the next thing you will need is Ashita (click here to download) which is a custom bootloader by atom0s that allows the FFXI client to connect to private servers. Follow the installation instructions there.

8. Ashita Configuration
Once you have downloaded and installed Ashita, open the program and click the plus "+" sign on the far bottom left to create a new configuration. The "File:" line under "Boot Configurations" must be set to your custom bootmod which will be under YOUR-ASHITA-INSTALL-LOCATION\ffxi-bootmod\pol.exe. Next, set the "Command:" line to --server --hairpin. You can also set the client's window size if you go to the "Window" tab at the far left. When you are done, click the check mark at the far bottom and then launch that configuration you just made using the red play button next to its name.

9. Bootloader Prompt
This will bring up a command prompt with some colorful text in it. Type in the number "2" and hit enter to begin creating a new account. Enter a username and then a password and then verify the password. When complete, your FFXI client will now open! In the future you will now always put "1" as your first prompt to connect to your account instead of creating.

10. In-Game
Accept the agreement at the start and then select "New Character" to create your character. Upon completion of the character creation screen, there will sometimes be login errors for brand new characters. If you get an error, close the client, wait a few minutes (to allow your account session to time out) and then log back in to try again. If this error persists you can hop in on Discord and try to troubleshoot with staff or other players in the help-desk channel.
